CALL TO ARTISTS: ART LENDING LIBRARY (A.L.L.)

TO: COOPER RESIDENTS AND OTHER INTERSTED ARTISTS (PASS IT ON!)

DATE: AUGUST 3, 2009

ASSOCIATED EVENT: AUGUST 20TH ART LENDING LIBRARY OPENING

Mission

The Art Lending Library is a system of lending and borrowing artwork to the public for free. It is a trust-based program where artists provide artwork to be checked out by any member of the public, and patrons allow artwork and artists into their homes; all in the spirit of sharing.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Think of a family in White Center with a painting of yours hanging in their living room. Imagine a grandmother at Kenney retirement home with a sculpture you created next to her phone. The idea is simple:

1) ARTWORK SUBMITTAL: you submit your work to the circulation librarians (Seth, Gina and Flynn). See below for drop off dates.

2) CATALOGING: Your work will then be cataloged, photographed and filed. A catalog card will be generated per piece of work and serve as a record and reference.

3) CHECK-OUT: During library opening(October 9, 2008) a library will be created in the cultural center. The public will be invited to register for membership in the form of a library card. The membership librarians (Seth, Gina and Flynn) will create library cards and records of each participant including a photograph and appropriate paperwork to track members. Once membership is granted patrons will be invited to select one piece of work to be checked out in their name for a 2-month period.

5) INSTALLATION: Librarians will install the artwork at each patron’s home. At the time of checkout a date will be established when librarians will visit the patron’s home and secure the artwork in a suitable location.

6) RETURN: Librarians accompanied will visit the patron’s home to remove the work and return it to the library for future circulation.

RULES AND REGULATIONS:

1) We ask that artists be willing to keep their art in circulation for at least 2 calendar years in order that the same piece has a chance to circulate through different members homes.

2) At any point, artists may remove work from circulation as long as it is not currently checked out.  We are not holding anything for ransom.

3) We do not consider ourselves a gallery, so if at any time a member asks about purchasing a piece, the librarians will facilitate a connection between the artist and the member, who then can decide on how to proceed.

4) No nudity! (Just kidding)

5) Patrons who violate any checkout and return dates will be reprimanded (we know where they live, have photo evidence, address etc.).

6) By submitting to the library please be aware that your art may be: shit on, charred, ripped, cherished, torn, broken, chewed-on, valued, laughed at, abducted, ridiculed, belittled, loved, poked, enjoyed, tipped, licked, fondled, stared at, stolen, rented, ogled, collaborated with, returned early etc. but we hope that with the personal connection being made with each patron and the process for which they must endure that artwork will be returned in an equivalent state that it was lent.

Note: (AFTER MORE THAN A YEAR OF THE LIBRARY BEING ACTIVE, WE HAVE NOT HAD ONE INCIDENT.)

7) We do not discriminate based on quality of line, subject matter, concept, medium or religion.

ARTWORK SUBMITTAL:

If you would like to submit work(s) to the library you have 2 options:

1) Email us a JPEG of the work at artlendinglibrary@gmail.com with title, medium, date dimensions. And arrange to drop of the piece before August 20th, 2009.

2) We will have 2 drop off times when you may bring the artwork to be photographed and stored before the opening. These events will be held at the Cooper School 4408 Delridge Way SW, #403 (come around back to ring up) on Friday August 7th, 6:30-9 PM.
